Current Gold & Oil Trading Patterns Unfolding

By: Chris Vermeulen – www.GoldAndOilGuy.com

The past two months we have seen all the focus from traders and investors be on the equities market. And rightly so and stocks run higher and higher. But there are two commodities that look ready to explode being gold and oil (actually three if you count silver).

Below are the charts of gold futures and crude oil 4 hour charts. Each candle stick is 4 hours allows us to look back 1-2 months while still being able to see all the intraday price action (pivot highs, pivot lows, strong volume spikes and if they were buyers or sellers…).

The 4 hour chart is one time frame most traders overlook but from my experience I find it to be the best one for spotting day trades, momentum trades and swing trades which pack a powerful yes quick punch.

As you can see below with the annotated charts both gold and silver are setting up for higher prices in the next 1-2 weeks from a technical point of view. That being said we may see a couple days of weakness first before they start moving up again.

Five Best Trade Ideas for the Next Two Weeks

The last week of the year volume tends to be light due to the fact that big money traders are busy enjoying the holidays and waiting for their yearend bonuses.

I was not planning on doing much this week because of the low volume but after reviewing some charts and risk levels on my top 5 trading vehicles I could not help but share my findings with everyone last Friday.

You can see what I talked about on Friday here: http://www.thegoldandoilguy.com/articles/holiday-short-squeeze-oil-trade-idea/

This Wednesday turned out to be an exciting session with all 5 of my trade ideas moving in our favour right on queue.

Charts of the 5 investments moving in the directions we anticipated …
– Dollar bounced off support

– Stocks are topping and selling off today

– Oil looks to have topped and is selling off

– Gold and Silver are moving lower

– VIX (Volatility Index) just bounced

Many of my readers took full advantage of my recent analysis and trade ideas which is great to hear.  All the different ways individuals used to make money from Friday’s analysis is mind blowing…

The most common trade is the oil one with most traders adding more to Tuesday when the price reached its key resistance level on the chart. Also many traders took partial profits Wednesday locking in 3% or more in two days using the SCO ETF.

It’s amazing how many people like to trade the vix using ETFs. The best trade from followers thus far was an 8% gain in TVIX which was bought 4 days ago anticipating the pop in volatility which I had been talking about last week. Keep in mind ETFs for trading the vix are not very good in general. I stay away from them, but TVIX is the best I found so far.

Currently stocks are oversold falling sharply from the pre-market highs. Meaning stocks have fallen too far too fast and a bounce is likely to take place Thursday.

Also we saw some panic selling hit the market today with 14 sellers to 1 buyer. That level tells me that the market needs some time to recover and build up strength for another selloff later this week or next. We will see this pause unfold when the SP500 drifts higher for a session or two with light buying volume. This will confirm sellers are in control and give us another short setup.

In my Wednesday morning video I explained how/where to set stops when using leveraged ETFs because I know 90% of traders using them do not have a clue as to how to do this and they get shaken out of their trades just before a top or bottom. So if you want to learn more about it watch this morning’s video please: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDagN5Vpvys

I hope this helps you understand things more… Over time you will pickup on a lot of new trading tips, tools and techniques with this free newsletter so just give it time and keep trades small until you are comfortable with my analysis.

Holiday Short Squeeze & Oil Trade Idea

Typically, the week before Christmas, stocks and commodities drift higher due to the lack of participants.  Light volume favours higher prices, which is why stocks want to rise going into the holiday season.

The big money players, like hedge fund managers, are finished for the year.  They’re sitting on the sidelines enjoying the holiday season while waiting for their year-end bonus checks.

Let’s take a quick look at how the week finished…

Friday was an interesting session as stocks and oil reached some key resistance levels.  Below are my thoughts, charts, and a possible trade idea for next week.

Gold & Silver Thoughts:

Looking at the long term charts of gold and silver, I feel they could head much lower in the first quarter of 2012.  The inverse relationship between the dollar index and gold makes me think this is a high probability scenario.

The weekly dollar index chart remains strong at this point and could start another very strong rally any day. Once the dollar starts heading higher, expect precious metals to move down along with equities.

SP500, Dollar and Volatility Index

Below are three charts stacked on top of each other.  They are marked with my analysis and thoughts for next week.  Personally, I don’t feel shorting stocks is a safe play.  The last week of the year, we can see the volatility index (VIX), and the dollar, rise without putting pressure on stocks.  So be aware of that.

TRADE IDEA – View Chart:

Crude oil looks like a great low risk opportunity (a real “Christmas” present!) from Mr. Market. SCO would be the ETF for US based traders.  HOD, which is listed on the TSX, is good for Canadians.  I favour this setup because I don’t feel that oil will be as affected from the holiday bulge as will American equities.

Pre-Holiday Trading Conclusion:

I was planning on avoiding the market Friday, but the charts were calling my name…  The session ended with what looked to be a short squeeze. The remaining short positions didn’t get their expected drop in price.  Consequently, when the traders all started to cover their shorts (buy) just before the close, it caused a strong surge higher.

I do not recommend shorting stocks next week because of the light volume.  However, oil looks good to me.

Just thought I would share my end of the week thoughts, and wish you a Merry Christmas!

Cheers!

Precious Metals, Equities & Oil Long Term Outlook Part II

Yet another major market correction has begun to unfold over the past couple of weeks.

I have a much different outlook on the markets than most everyone else. This likely includes you as well. However, before you stop reading what I have to say, hear me out. My outlook and opinions are based strictly on price, volume, inter-market analysis, and crowd behavior. I hope you will consider my ideas and how they might affect your current positions.

My fundamental thinking is contrarian in nature. I feel that gold and silver have risen because of obvious reasons, those mainly being the printing of money. Also, fears that fiat currencies will become obsolete in the next 5 years continue to push the metals higher.

The flaw with that thinking is that most or all of the bad news has come out with European crisis. We know there are still major issues to resolve, however, the end of the world did not happen. Looking forward 5 years, countries will likely have stopped acting like teenagers who spend more money than they have on their credit cards. Hopefully they start creating budgets which they can and will abide by.

Should this happen, it would mean that the global economy as a whole will be stronger than ever before. We may have a few bumps along the way, but I feel countries and individuals will be better positioned than ever a scant 5 years from now.

Two weeks ago, I sent my “big picture” outlook to my subscribers, followers, and financial websites in which I warned of a major pullback. You can take a quick look at what the charts looked like 2 weeks ago: http://www.thegoldandoilguy.com/articles/the-currency-war-big-picture-analysis-for-gold-silver-socks/

Since my warning we have seen the financial markets fall:
SP500 down 2.6%
Crude Oil down 4.4%
Gold down 9.6%
and Silver down 12.2%

If you had invested in any of the leveraged exchange traded funds of these items, you could have doubled or tripled your returns. The numbers of those who have been cashing in on my advice about these recent pullbacks, have been very gratifying to hear about. The exciting part about trading is the fact that moves like this happen all the time. So if you missed this one, don’t worry because there is another opportunity just around the corner.

While my negative views on stocks and precious metals may rub the gold and silver bugs the wrong way, I just want to point out what is unfolding in an objective way in order for everyone to see both sides of the trade. I also would like to mention that this analysis can, and likely will change on a weekly basis as the financial markets and global economies evolve over time. The point I am trying to get across is that I am not a “Gloom and Doom” kind of guy. I don’t always favor the down side. Rather, I am a technical trader simply providing my analysis and giving odds for what to expect next.

Let’s take a look at some charts and dig right in…

Mid-Week Market Madness Trend Analysis Conclusion:

In short, stocks and commodities are under pressure from the rising dollar. We have already seen a sizable pullback but there may be more to come in the next few trading sessions.

Overall, the charts are starting to look very negative which the majority of traders/investors around the world are starting to notice. With any luck they will fuel the market with more selling pressure pushing positions that my subscribers and I are holding deeper into the money.

Now that the masses are starting to get nervous and are beginning to sell out of their positions, I am on high alert for a panic washout selling day. This occurs when everyone around the world panics at the same time and bails out of their long positions. Prices drop sharply, volume shoots through the roof, and my custom indicators for spotting extreme sentiment levels sends me an alert to start covering my shorts and tightening our stops.

Hold on tight as this could be a crazy few trading sessions….

How to Trade Gold and Oil Prices This Coming Week

How To Trade Gold & Oil – The past couple weeks have been tough for most investors. The recent light volume rallies which have taken place in gold, oil and stocks has been generating mixed signals for technical analysts like myself. In order avoid a large draw down on your trading capital you must focus on the long term intraday charts.

What is a long term intraday chart you ask? It is simply a 4 or 8 hour candlestick or bar chart. For example the charts below in this report are 4 hour charts. So each candlestick represents 4 hours.

Why should you use these long term intraday charts instead of say a daily chart? There are four main reasons for this:

  1. If you used a daily chart then this information would be condensed showing you the daily high, low, open and closing prices. While the 4 hour futures chart shows you large multi intraday chart patterns that most traders would never see…  Patterns not seen by the average investor have a higher probability of working in your favour. Also these patterns are much larger than just normal intraday patterns which you see on the 5, 10, or 60 minute charts. Remember the larger the pattern the more potential profit there will be.
  2. These longer time frames allow us to follow gold, silver, oil and stock indexes around the clock 24/7 using futures contracts. Think about it… regular trading hours from 9:30am – 4pm ET only allows you to see 1/3rd of the price action each day. That means you are only seeing parts of larger patterns while the 24/7 contracts show you ALL Price Action.
  3. The last reason you must use futures charts is for the volume readings. Futures show real volume levels which can be used for trading. So the volume you see on ETFs will not have the proper volume levels for that specific commodity or index. More times than not it almost the opposite…
  4. My last reason for trading long term intraday futures charts is because the price of the underlying commodity or index moves true while the ETFs which try to shadow these commodities generate false breakouts and breakdowns on a regular basis. Watch my video about this here: http://www.thetechnicaltraders.com/ETF-trading-videos/TTTOct19Oil/index.html

Let’s take a look at the charts…

Gold Futures Contract – 240 Minute (4 Hour) Chart

Gold finally broke down from the bearish rising wedge which it had been forming through late September until mid October. I know the majority of traders, investors, and financial newsletters have already positioned themselves either long or short the metal as they anticipate the next major move.

I will agree that a large move either up or down is just around the corner but what sets me apart from others is the fact that I don’t bet my hard earned money when the odds are 50/50. I don’t pick tops or bottoms; rather I wait for a clean break out or low risk entry point. Only then will I take action. Until the blue box on the chart has been broken with some type of retest I will continue to observe and analyze the chart of gold.

How To Trade Gold

Crude Oil Futures Contract – 240 Minute (4 Hour) Chart

The past month crude oil trading has been very profitable for subscribers and me. We shorted crude oil using an inverse etf in September which moved over 20% in our favour within a few trading sessions. And just last week we shorted it again for a 7.5% move in less than 24 hours.

Overall I am still bearish on oil but have moved to cash until I see another high probability setup unfolding. The recent price action in crude oil makes the odds about a 50/50 bet as to which way it will break next. This is why I have moved back to cash and pocketed the quick gain.

How To Trade Oil

SP500 Exchange Traded Fund – 240 Minute (4 Hour) Chart

This chart is not the SP500 futures contract. This is just the SPY ETF but what I wanted to show was how the market was showing mixed signals. The past couple weeks price has been broadening and this can be taken two different ways…

More times than not it is seen as a bearish pattern and price generally falls afterwards. But in rare situations which I think we could be experiencing now this broadening price action can be very bullish, meaning much higher prices ahead. So I continue to observe and prepare for a possible trade setup.

How To Trade Indexes

Weekend Gold, Oil and Stocks Trend Conclusion:

In short, I feel the market is on the verge of a strong move. The problem is that price action, market sentiment and economic news are all giving mixed signals…

The best position right now is in cash and if something unfolds this week to our favour, then we will get involved but I am not going to take a 50/50 guess on what the next move is until the odds are in favour to one side or the other.

August until now (October 24) the SP500 is down -3.7% and Gold is up 1.1%, Silver is down 20% and oil is down -7.2. Subscribers of my newsletter have pocketed over 38.5% in total gains using my simple low risk ETF trading alerts.

The Three Safe Havens Where Big Money is Going

It seems everyone is looking for a place to put their hard earned money as uncertainty around the globe continues to rise. Oil, Gold, and Silver which have been the hot investments for the past few years took it on the chin over the past month with oil falling 13%, gold dropping 15%, and silver with a whopping 30% decline. We did actually see sharply lower prices, but last week these oversold commodities had a bounce and recouped some of their losses.

It has been a month since I covered the dollar index in detail and back on August 31st I pointed to a potentially large shift in the US dollar. The charts were pointing to a sizable rally which would likely send stocks and all commodities crashing lower. Since then we have seen just that and the so called safe havens (Gold, Silver, Oil) have dropped taking most investment and retirement accounts down with them. I did talk about these so called safe havens a couple weeks back stating my point of view on them.

My Cole’s Note Summary: “I do not consider any investment vehicle a safe haven if it can drop 15% in value within 1-2 days. And I would never put a large position of my account especially a retirement account into these investments if I were over 50 yrs of age.”

So where are the big, smart, and conservative traders putting their money to work?

Let’s dig down and take a quick look at the charts…

The 20 Year Bond – Daily Chart:

US Dollar – Daily Chart:

Utility Sector (Dividend Paying Stocks) – Daily Chart:

Weekend Trading Conclusion:

In short, I feel both stocks and commodities are oversold but need more time to bottom and we may see a few more days of lower prices in the near future. I see the dollar starting to get toppy on the daily chart and once that rolls over then stocks should bottom along with gold, silver, and oil.

Once equity prices start to bounce I anticipate money to flow out of the safe haven (Bonds) and into stocks where there are much larger potential gains to be had. All this could play out in a couple days so I am keeping a very close eye on everything.

Last week we bought the inverse SP500 etf (SDS) anticipating another surge higher in the dollar which would send stocks down in value. So far we are sitting with a gain of 8.2% and the potential for another 4 – 10% if things play out as I expect. Recent Market Trends Remain In Place – Get Positioned!

What a trading session Wednesday was with the FOMC meeting and the FED coming out leaving the Fed Funds Rate unchanged at 0.25% and saying the economy is looking weak and will not likely to get better any time soon. This wave of negative news triggered a selling spree across the board in stocks, metals, and oil. On the flip side all that money being pulled out of those investments was being dumped into bonds and the dollar currency.

So the question everyone is asking is why almost every asset class sold off after the Federal Reserve’s statement today? The next question is how do we position ourselves to profit?

Understanding how the market moves is not a simple task, if it was that easy everyone would be pulling money out of the market on a daily or monthly basis. With that being said, moves can be anticipated if enough indicators are pointing to the same outcome.

Gold, SP500 and Oil 10 Minute Charts Showing Todays 2:15 FED News
Over the past few weeks we have been seeing stocks, oil, and gold turn bearish with similar price and volume action. Having three major investment vehicles hinting towards a move in the same direction as each other increases the odds for that move to occur. With the Fed coming out with negative news and no quantitative easing on tap, a rally in the dollar was triggered because inflation (printing of money) is not in the picture for some time still.

Bonds and Dollar Index 10 Minute Charts Showing Today’s 2:15 FED News
Now if we look at the safe havens we can see the positive side to today’s news.
Bonds have been trading higher for some time and the key in trading is to trade with the trend. Though it’s easier said than done… In this morning’s pre-market analysis I talked about bond prices and how they are looking toppy but we need one more large surge higher before I will consider looking for a short trade setup. Today’s news sent bonds surging higher which I feel will happen for a few more days. Once the momentum stalls out of bonds, then I may be looking to short bonds using the TBT inverse bond fund.

The fact that there is no quantitative easing planned is bullish for the dollar. Stepping back a few weeks we have seen the dollar index rally very strongly. The move up was an impulse wave meaning a trend reversal from the multi-month down trend. Knowing that the dollar had shifted from a down trend to a strong uptrend prior to the Fed’s announcement today was our tip off to being long the dollar several days ago at a much lower price level.

Mid-Week Market Trend Conclusion:
In short, I feel the intermediate trend (5-20 days) remains firmly down for stocks and crude oil. Silver is more of a wild card because it is more of an industrial metal/speculative investment and it can move at times with gold or down with stocks…

Looking at gold. I am bullish on gold long term but at this time I remain neutral until I see how the next couple trading sessions play out.

Bonds I remain neutral because they have moved a long way without any substantial pause or pullback and I feel one really positive headline news item could send bonds sharply lower.

The dollar index shifted from a strong down trend to a very strong up trend last month and I feel we could see another substantial rally unfold. I have an 80.00 – 81.00 price target on the dollar index at this time.

Dollar’s On the Verge of a Relief Rally Look Out!

Let’s talk about the dollar for a moment… The US Dollar has been stuck in a very large trading range during the past 4 months. But when the dollar actually breaks out of this pattern in either direction we should see some big price movements across the board in stocks and commodities.

From July through mid-August I was bearish on the dollar. But over the past 2 weeks the price action has become more neutral/bullish in my opinion. Its clear there is still indecision with the dollar value because every surge in price either up or down is quickly followed by a surge in the opposite direction. The key here is that the support level down at the 73.50 area has held more than three times and now I think the downward momentum is about to shift. The UUP bullish dollar etf is a good option.

Dollar Index Chart

Gold Chart:
Looking at the gold chart I see potential for another sharp drop to the low $1600’s. While I like the look of this chart for lower prices there is still a wild card which is the Euro-Land issues… I’m not willing to bet on lower prices because we could wake up any day to some poor news which instantly sends gold higher. Rather I am waiting for things to unfold then look to buy again for another 10-20% gain on the next rally.

Crude Oil Chart:
This chart is straight forward… The trend is down and at this time all bounces are to be looked at as shorting opportunities.

SP500 Index:

The equities market has broken down sharply over the past couple months and now we are seeing a rebound and small cap stocks are making big gains. With the dollar looking bullish and stocks trading up at resistance I have a feeling we may see another downward move within the next week or so to test the lows or make a new low before putting in a real bottom.

Mid-Week Trend Trading Conclusion:
In short, I feel the market overall is leaning towards lower prices in the coming week or two. After that we will have to re-analyze because it may be a fantastic buying opportunity for stocks and commodities.
